Amy Schlossberg
Mrs Florida Classic Beauty 2008
I have been a daughter, student, graduate, lifeguard,
artist, soldier, and wife. Who would have imagined I would be Mrs. Florida
Classic Beauty 2008! Hello, my name is Amy Carol Schlossberg. I am a 5’11
brunette with blue eyes. I live, work, and go to college in South Florida. I am
31 years old and will be celebrating my first wedding anniversary on May 27,
2008! In addition, I will be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in English
with a minor in Humanities in May of 2009.
I was born in Washington, D.C. and lived
in Virginia until age fourteen when my family moved to Florida. I graduated
from high school and had no idea what I wanted to do. So I did the first thing
that came to mind. I joined the United States ARMY. My father and several
uncles had been in the military and the lifestyle was a desirable one with
opportunities to grow and learn. This opportunity gave me the money I needed to
attend junior college and promoted growth in me and empowered me to be great.
After a few years, I got an associates degree and a
new job as a lifeguard. I never had to save anyone from drowning thanks to
great prevention. I did give the Heimlich to a choking victim, which was
surreal, which brings me to my platform. I am a volunteer for the Red Cross; I
am certified in CPR-Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation and AED-Artificial External Defibrillator.
These are life saving techniques which no household should be without. You see,
I was at home alone one day eating lunch and I started to choke. I had to give
myself the Heimlich in order to stay alive. I had choked on a piece of carrot
that became semi-lodged in my throat. I threw myself over a chair in my house
about fifteen times and suddenly I had air and the carrot went flying! I
constantly promote the Red Cross and convince people to get certified. It’s the
best investment anyone can make.
Something you may not know about me
is that I am an artist. I sell my jewelry and other works of art through a
non-profit organization called Artserve. You can see
examples of my art at www.artserve.org. I am working on a book that
is targeted towards people healing from physical and sexual abuse. It is a
compilation of poetry and haiku. I am also a five time published poet and
photographer. I have been published in “Digressions” literary Magazine, “P’anKu” Literary Magazine, and my photographs have been
displayed at Nova Southeastern University. I work and attend classes at Nova
Southeastern University full-time and belong to Delta Phi Epsilon sorority,
where I have held the positions of Risk Management, Parents & Alumna, Vice
President of Programming, and worked to raise funds for charities such as Women
in Distress, Joe DiMaggio’s Children’s Hospital, Ronald McDonald House, American
Cancer Society, Red Cross, and Cystic Fibrosis. I also am a spokesperson for trichotillomania, www.trich.org because I am recovering from
this disorder.
My other Philanthropies include
being a spokeswoman for the Girl Scouts of Broward County, Florida,
volunteering for the cities of Davie and Hollywood, Donating my art to Artserve’s annual silent auction for the homeless, and volunteering
for local schools.
The most exciting place I ever
traveled was to Austin Texas with my husband on our honeymoon. We went to
Ladybird Johnson National wildflower garden and were in awe! I hope to visit
places in Europe and stay in different castles of the world. We are planning a
trip for next summer and that dream will come true.
People refer to me as a “Jacqueline
of all trades” and that suits me just fine. I don’t think I’ll ever stay still!
Make your dreams come true-Don’t wish, Amy
